Our Cause

The education gap is real. We are doing something about it.

Access to quality academic support is not equal. Income, geography, and background all shape whether a student gets the help they need. ConnectEd exists to close that gap.

90%

Income shapes access

90% of students in high-income schools have access to physics classes, compared to just 43% in low-income schools. Access to core coursework is heavily determined by where you grow up.

Reading below grade level

Only 1 in 3 U.S. 4th graders reads at grade level. Early literacy gaps compound over time, making it harder for students to access and succeed in more advanced academic subjects down the road.

Tutoring is out of reach

The average private tutoring session costs $40 to $100 per hour, putting consistent academic support completely out of reach for millions of families across the country.

2x

Tutoring works

Students who receive consistent tutoring are twice as likely to pass standardized assessments. Peer support, in particular, has been shown to be one of the most effective and accessible interventions available.

Our Mission

Connected in name.
Connected in purpose.

ConnectEd was built on the belief that education works best when it flows in both directions. We pair older student volunteers with younger learners, creating a network where everyone grows. Because we operate fully online, we can reach students wherever they are.

What we stand for

  • Academic support should be free and accessible to every student
  • Older students make the most effective and relatable mentors
  • Being fully online means we can serve any student, anywhere
  • Education is a two-way bridge. Every student teaches and every student learns

For students seeking support

Elementary and middle schoolers get paired with a dedicated volunteer tutor for personalized 1-on-1 academic support in STEM and core subjects. Completely free, fully online.

For students who want to give back

Middle and high schoolers build real experience, earn verified volunteer hours, and develop consistent community impact that genuinely stands out. No prior tutoring experience required.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

ConnectEd is a student-led nonprofit dedicated to reducing the effects of inequalities in academic and STEM education access. We connect older student volunteers with younger learners who need academic support, for free. Our team is based in Washington state, and because we operate fully online, we can serve students anywhere.
Our team is based in Washington state. Because all sessions are held virtually via Google Meet, we are able to serve students and tutors regardless of where they are located.
ConnectEd is actively building partnerships with schools and organizations across the Bellevue area and surrounding districts. Our students and tutors come from schools within Bellevue School District and Seattle Public Schools, as well as independent schools.

We also work to connect with:
  • PTSA organizations
  • National Honor Society chapters
  • After-school and youth support programs

If you are a school or organization interested in partnering with ConnectEd, we would love to connect. Reach out at contact@connecting-education.org.
Once matched, tutors and students meet virtually for 30 to 60 minute sessions. Each session follows a structured format: a brief check-in to build rapport, focused concept work, a practice activity, and a wrap-up summary. Tutors also follow up with parents after each session to share progress.
Sessions are held weekly or biweekly depending on the student's needs and the tutor's availability. ConnectEd leadership works with each pair to find the schedule that works best.
All sessions are held virtually via Google Meet. Both tutors and students are expected to have their cameras on. This keeps everything visible and monitored, and allows us to serve students from anywhere.
Our tutors are middle and high school students who have applied to volunteer with ConnectEd. They go through an onboarding process and are vetted by our leadership team to ensure they meet our standards for reliability, preparation, and professionalism before being matched with a student.
Yes, completely. ConnectEd is a nonprofit organization and our services are always 100% free for students and families. No fees, no subscriptions, no hidden costs of any kind.
After each session, tutors submit a volunteer hours form along with screenshot proof of the session. ConnectEd leadership reviews and approves submissions, then logs the hours in our official tracking spreadsheet. Falsification of any submission results in immediate removal from the program.
Safety is central to how ConnectEd operates. All sessions are held virtually on Google Meet with cameras on, keeping everything visible. Tutors are instructed to use only approved communication platforms and avoid private, unmonitored channels. Any safety concerns must be reported to ConnectEd leadership immediately.
